Serving in the Military
This application is used for the following types of deferments:
Military Deferment Application (pdf)
Military Service Deferment (Active Duty during Wartime)
Federal Perkins loans are eligible for this type of military deferment. Payments are not required and interest will not accrue during the deferment.
Eligibility
You must be serving on active duty during a war, national emergency, or other military operation in one of the following U.S. Armed Forces:
- Army
- Navy
- Air Force
- Marine Corps
- Coast Guard
- National Guard
Additionally, to qualify for a military deferment, your loan must be paid to the start of the deferment period.
Grace Period
You will receive an additional six-month grace period. Payments are not required and interest will not accrue during the post-deferment grace period.
Additional 180 Days
A 180-day period will also be added to each military deferment following the borrower's demobilization. Combined with the grace period (mentioned above), the loan will re-enter repayment approximately one year following demobilization.
Application Process
There are two ways to apply:

- As long as your Official Military orders have a beginning and end date of service you may submit a copy of your orders in place of the Serving in the Military Deferment Application.
Other Options
If your loan is not eligible for a military deferment and you are unable to meet your scheduled payments, you may apply for an economic hardship deferment or forbearance.
Military Deferment: Post Demobilization
Federal Perkins loans are eligible for this type of military deferment. Payments are not required and interest will not accrue during the period of deferment.
Eligibility
Effective October 1, 2007, qualified members of the National Guard, Armed Forces Reserve, and retirees of the armed forces are eligible for a 13-month period of deferment following the completion of their active duty military service. The borrower must have been enrolled in a postsecondary school at the time of, or within six months prior to, their activation. Reserve or retired members of the Armed Forces may qualify and receive both the post-active duty deferment and the military service deferment. If the borrower receives both deferments, the overlapping periods of deferment will run concurrently.
Additionally, to qualify for a military post demobilization deferment, your loan must be paid to the start of the deferment period.
